As soon as I got back from Japan, I unpacked my trunk and thrust Hyperdimension Neptune Mk2 into the PS3.
The story begins three years after the first Hyperdimension Neptune : the four Godesses were defeated by the reformed Magiquone organization. As Magiquone rules the Gamindustri with 80% shares, Ifa, Compa and Neptune’s little sister Nepgear begin a journey to regain those shares and save Neptune and the others.
The first iteration being under average, graphic changes were in order. The progress is visible but could have been better. The characters do look much better in fights, but the now 3D animated in the dialog scenes are far from perfect (Histoire looks extremely cute though). I liked the 2D breathing effect much better.
The organization of the game knows little change : you now take missions from a guild between the story events. The only new thing for now is the item creation, which takes some time as you have to collect materials. The changes in design and audio are still really nice.
The battle system is less unforgiving, as you can now heal whenever you want. But in the same time I feel like it lost the complexity of the first one : it’s far more ARPG-ish and the combo chains seem less decisive. However, the game is still quite difficult and you have to move and break efficiently to win. Furthermore, I still can’t use combos at their fullest, so the best is yet to come… and those first five hours were a real pleasure already!
